16 fox , Could you post a picture of the watertable marks (sans SN). I would like to compare with ones I have seen. Thanks you in advanced.

interesting that the engraving on the forearm latch does not seem to match the engraving on the frame or that of the other 16SPEs posted here. Almost looks like that of an A grade maybe?

Thanks for sharing.

it has been a while since i have been on here... straight shot if you are still interested in the water tables i will try to get you some photos soon.
and asavage i have not noticed that the forearm latch does not look like any of the other SPEs on the website. however i did talk with another member about the forearm itself with different checkering and the overall shape was not like the others very interesting that you noticed that however it does have the sn stamped into the forearm. i guess that could have been done by anyone with a set of stamps... i wonder though if a graded forend iron would work on an spe

with some fit and finish any appropriate sized graded forearm should fit any other similarly bored gun from my understanding. Just b/c the serial is on the fore end iron does not necessarily mean the latch was not changed, they are two independent pieces that are just screwed together from what I can tell. Your latch is very similar to my Savage era CE latch with the flowing crossing lines but does not look identical. It does not however look anything like my later B style engraved forearm latch. I don't have an A grade to compare to....

I'm quite the novice around here and I am not trying to say its not "right" just different... it could have been changed but also could have been a part use up at the factory. The 30's were not exactly the hey days for the Fox guns or for Savage. I know of Savage 99 that by serial number would have been a mid teens production that when lettered had a ship date in the mid 30's. Assumption is that it was found around the factory and put together and sold.

Some of the more experts might chime in with a comment. Marshfellow or Brian are big collectors of the SPEs and could like tell you what they have seen. This might have been the style they went to later...or earlier... then the other guns posted here....

Cheers
